What are MLB blackout restrictions?
MLB.TV subscribers are subject to home television territory blackouts. If you live in a team’s designated broadcast territory, their live games are unavailable on MLB.TV — regardless of whether the team is home or away, and regardless of whether the game is actually televised locally.
On-demand archives become available 90 minutes after a game ends. Live audio is available through MLB+ (included with all MLB.TV subscriptions).
Some areas are blacked out by multiple teams. Iowa, for example, is claimed by six teams — the Brewers, Cardinals, Cubs, Royals, Twins, and White Sox — despite being hours from any of those cities. Las Vegas is blacked out by the Diamondbacks, Athletics, Angels, Dodgers, Padres, and Giants.
Where does this data come from?
This map is built from MLB’s own Game Availability Locator, which publishes blackout assignments per zip code. We query every US zip code and visualize the results here. MLB’s own documentation pages — including their MLB.TV Game Availability article — contain broken links, so we built this as a working public alternative.
About gaps in the map
MLB assigns blackout territories by zip code, so the map boundaries come from US Census zip code tabulation areas (ZCTAs). You may notice small gaps — these are areas without an assigned zip code, such as large bodies of water, national forests, military reservations, and other unincorporated federal land. These areas have no zip code for MLB to assign a blackout to, so they appear unfilled.
If you believe your blackout territory has been incorrectly assigned, MLB Customer Service can be reached at 866-244-2291 (US) or 315-203-6761 (International).
